Safety Guide

Dubai Dune Buggy

A dune buggy ride is one of the most exciting ways to explore the Arabian Desert, but the experience should always be about controlled adventure, not reckless driving. The desert has changing sand conditions, steep dunes and uneven terrain, so following basic safety practices makes a big difference.

At Dubai Dune Buggy LLC, every ride starts with proper guidance before you head into the desert. Our instructor explains the buggy controls, basic driving techniques and the rules you need to follow during the tour. You do not need previous off-road experience for most of our tours, but you do need to listen to your instructor and drive responsibly.

Whether this is your first buggy experience or you already enjoy off-road driving, these simple safety guidelines will help you prepare for a comfortable and enjoyable ride.

🧑‍🏫 Pre-Ride Training & Safety Briefing

Before entering the dunes, every driver receives a safety briefing and basic practical training from our instructor. We explain how to use the main controls, including the accelerator, brakes, and steering, and show you the basics of handling the buggy on sandy terrain.

First-time riders do not need to feel nervous. Our team gives you time to understand the controls and ask questions before the ride begins. The aim is to make sure you know how to operate the buggy and understand the safety instructions before heading into the desert.

Your briefing covers:

  • How to operate the buggy controls
  • Acceleration and braking
  • Basic steering on sand
  • How to approach dunes safely
  • How to follow the instructor
  • Maintaining a safe distance
  • What to do if you need assistance

Always complete the training and briefing before starting your ride.

🪖 Wear Your Safety Gear Correctly

Proper safety equipment should always be worn during the ride. Make sure your helmet, goggles and seat belt or safety harness are correctly fitted before the buggy starts moving.

Goggles can help protect your eyes from blowing sand and dust, especially when riding behind another buggy.

Before starting, check that:

  • Your helmet fits securely
  • Your goggles are comfortable
  • Your seat belt or harness is fastened
  • Nothing is interfering with the controls
  • You are seated comfortably

If anything feels loose or uncomfortable, tell your instructor before leaving.

👨‍✈️ Follow Your Instructor

Our instructors know the desert route and understand how sand and dune conditions can change. During a guided ride, stay with the group and follow the instructions given by your instructor.

Do not suddenly leave the route, take an unfamiliar dune or attempt a manoeuvre without guidance. If the instructor changes the pace or route because of the terrain, follow those directions.

A guided buggy tour is about enjoying the desert safely, not trying to be the fastest rider.

🚗 Drive Smoothly on Sand

Driving a buggy on sand is different from driving on a normal road. Soft sand, uneven ground and changing slopes require controlled steering and acceleration.

For a smoother ride:

  • Keep both hands on the steering wheel
  • Use smooth steering movements
  • Avoid sudden braking and acceleration
  • Adjust your speed to the terrain
  • Slow down when approaching difficult sections
  • Never attempt a manoeuvre beyond your ability

Even experienced off-road drivers should follow the instructions given for the particular tour and route.

📏 Maintain a Safe Distance

Always leave enough space between your buggy and the vehicle ahead. Sand and dust can be thrown backwards, and you need enough time to react if another buggy slows down or stops.

Your instructor may adjust the distance depending on the terrain and group size.

Do not overtake another buggy unless your instructor gives you permission to do so.

🛞 Check Your Position Before Driving

Before moving, make sure you are sitting comfortably and can easily reach the steering wheel, accelerator and brake.

Your seat belt or harness should be secured, and nothing should be blocking the pedals or controls.

If you have a passenger, make sure they are seated properly and secured before starting.

Taking a few moments to check everything before moving can make the ride much more comfortable.

🏁 No Racing or Reckless Driving

Dune buggy riding should be an exciting experience, but racing and reckless driving are not part of a safe tour.

Avoid:

  • Racing other buggies
  • Sudden sharp turns
  • Aggressive acceleration
  • Unnecessary overtaking
  • Risky manoeuvres
  • Driving outside the approved route

If you want more privacy or greater flexibility, ask our team about available private buggy experiences rather than trying to create your own pace within a group tour.

🛑 If You Have a Problem During the Ride

If you feel uncomfortable, become unwell or notice a problem with the buggy, slow down and inform your instructor.

Do not attempt to repair the vehicle yourself in the desert. Your guide can assess the situation and arrange the appropriate assistance.

Tell your instructor immediately if:

  • You feel dizzy or unwell
  • You have difficulty controlling the buggy
  • Your safety equipment becomes loose
  • You notice a mechanical problem
  • You lose sight of the group
  • You are unsure about an instruction

If something does not feel right, stop and communicate with your guide rather than trying to continue.

👕 What to Wear for a Dune Buggy Ride

The desert can be hot, dusty and windy, so comfortable clothing is the best choice.

We recommend:

  • Comfortable casual or sportswear
  • Closed-toe shoes or trainers
  • Lightweight trousers or comfortable shorts
  • A breathable shirt or top
  • Sunglasses when outside the buggy

Avoid high heels, flip-flops, loose jewellery and clothing that could become uncomfortable or interfere with the vehicle.

A light jacket can also be useful during cooler winter mornings and evenings.

💧 Stay Hydrated

Dubai’s desert climate can be demanding, particularly during the warmer months. Drink water before your activity and continue staying hydrated throughout your desert experience.

If you begin feeling weak, dizzy or unusually tired, tell your guide and take a break.

Refreshments can vary by package, so check your tour details when making your booking.

☀️ Protect Yourself From the Sun

The desert sun can be strong even when the temperature feels comfortable.

For daytime tours, we recommend applying sunscreen, wearing sunglasses when outside the buggy and choosing light, breathable clothing.

Morning tours can be a comfortable option during hotter periods, while sunrise trips also offer softer light and excellent conditions for desert photography.

👨‍👩‍👧 Passengers and Family Safety

Passenger rules can vary depending on the buggy model and selected tour. Children should only travel when they meet the requirements for the specific vehicle and package.

If you are travelling with children, provide their ages when making your booking so our team can help you choose a suitable option.

Passengers must remain seated and keep their safety restraints secured throughout the ride.

For specific age and passenger requirements, please see our Dune Buggy Restrictions & Requirements page.

🩺 Health and Physical Considerations

A dune buggy ride involves movement, vibration and uneven desert terrain. It may not be suitable for people with certain medical conditions or recent injuries.

If you have a health condition that could be affected by off-road activity, speak with your doctor before participating.

Pregnant guests should not take part in dune buggy rides.

For complete information about age, health, pregnancy and other eligibility requirements, please see our Restrictions & Requirements page.

🚫 Alcohol and Drugs Are Not Allowed

For everyone’s safety, guests must not drive while under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

Operating an off-road vehicle requires attention, coordination and good judgment. Anyone who appears unfit to drive may be refused participation for safety reasons.

Please enjoy your drinks after the adventure, not before it.

📱 Keep Your Personal Items Secure

Phones, cameras, wallets and other loose belongings should be secured before the ride.

The movement of the buggy and blowing sand can easily cause small items to fall out. Do not hold a phone or camera while driving if doing so distracts you from controlling the vehicle.

If you want to take photos or videos, follow your instructor’s directions and only stop where it is safe to do so.

🌡️ Weather and Desert Conditions

The desert is a natural environment, and conditions can change. Strong winds, poor visibility, extreme heat or other unusual conditions may affect the route or timing of a tour.

If conditions become unsuitable, our team may change the route, adjust the pace or stop the activity when necessary.

Safety always comes before completing a particular route or reaching a particular dune.

🧑‍🏫 First-Time Riders Are Welcome

You do not need previous off-road driving experience for most of our guided dune buggy tours.

Our instructor will explain the controls and basic driving techniques before you enter the dunes. Once the ride starts, follow the guide and stay within your comfort level.

If you feel nervous or need additional guidance, simply tell your instructor. There is no need to rush. A relaxed rider usually enjoys the desert much more than someone trying to push beyond their limits.
